Academy selects new members

8 May 2025

Today, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) announced that NIDI director prof. dr. Helga de Valk has been appointed as a new member of the Academy!

Her work advanced the field of demography by taking a life-course perspective on migration, acknowledging the role of family and social connections in the migration process. She does so by looking both at the individual perspective and the broader social context, in an international comparative perspective.

Next to her academic excellence, she has serves in many important roles, which include being the director of NIDI, and honorary president of the European Association of Population Studies (EAPS) and vice-chair of the Staatscommissie Demografische Ontwikkelingen 2025. She drives impact with her research by regularly advising Dutch and European policymakers.

Congratulations on this deserved achievement!

Today – at its 217th anniversary – the Academy presented seventeen new members of the Academy. They have been selected from a large number of nominations by expert juries in each scientific and scholarly field. The new members – ten women and seven men – don’t just excel in their research; they also attach great importance to playing a role in society as scientists. They will be officially installed on 29 September 2025.
