Family planning is an absolute necessity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It is not only used for population control, but also for the empowerment of women and the containment of sexually transmitted diseases. In this project, we tracked expenditures on family planning in 69 low- and middle-income countries on an annual basis. We used different data sources and methods to track and analyze funds obtained for family planning initiatives through donor communities, from the country in question, and from out of pocket payments. In addition we tracked detailed information on what these funds are being spent on in each country (e.g. contraceptives, logistics, education).
This information can be used to monitor and report on family planning resources, support evidence-based advocacy, and mobilize resources to scale up family planning service delivery.
This project was commissioned by and carried out in cooperation with UNFPA. The project was finished end of 2020.
