NIDI is proud to announce that Frank van Tubergen, head of the Migration and Migrants Department at NIDI-KNAW and professor at the sociology departments of the University of Groningen and Utrecht University, has been awarded a European Research Council Advanced Grant of €3.5 million for his Co‑Alpha project (Cohesion among immigrant and native youth in Generation Alpha). The project advances a multigroup-multidimensional framework for understanding social cohesion among contemporary youth growing up in diverse societies — examining how cohesion unfolds within and between multiple groups and across multiple dimensions.
“Contemporary youth in Europe are growing up in a time of increasing ethnic diversity, rising anti-immigrant sentiments, and pervasive social media. Co-Alpha will shed new light on how these profound changes shape social cohesion among both immigrant and native youth.”
Co‑Alpha combines a three-wave panel survey of 5,000 adolescents in the Netherlands — including complete social network data — with a custom-built experimental social media platform and Dutch register data. A unique feature is the link with a similar 2010 survey (CILS4EU) allowing for cohort comparison, shedding light on how cohesion has evolved over nearly two decades.
