Maaike van der Vleuten works as a researcher (associate professor/UHD) at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) at Stockholm University. She studies work and family lives of queer and adoptive families after entering parenthood (PI of project funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfonds) and life course trajectories of male and female same-sex couples in Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands (funded by a VENI grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO)). In 2025, she was awarded an ERC Starting Grant for her project Queer Pathways to Parenthood (QPATHS), which will examine how sexual minorities form families, the barriers they encounter, and the support systems that shape their journeys.
Maaike is editor of the NIDI popular science journal Demos, bulletin on population and society and on the international editorial board of the journal Community, Work and Family.
