Drs. N. (Nico) van Nimwegen

Nico was trained as a social demographer at Utrecht University. He worked at NIDI for most of his career in various research and management functions including Deputy Director. Working on the interface of science and practice, his activities focus on the social impacts of demographic change and the dissemination of research. Nico has led several national and international research projects. His ambition is to bridge the gap between research and practice. As a population expert he represented his country at the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union. Currently Nico is Honorary Fellow at NIDI and one of the editors of DEMOS. From its onset he has worked with the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) in several roles, including Secretary-General and Vice-President and since 2014 as its Executive Director. Nico was three times elected as Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) from 2005-2009, 2017-2021 and 2022-2025. He co-organized many international population conferences. Nico happily combines his work in demography with being an involved grandfather.
