Daniël van Wijk is a postdoctoral researcher at NIDI. He studies family formation, socioeconomic inequality, and contextual effects. His recent work focuses on the question how the economic conditions faced by today’s young adults influence their family life, particularly the decision to have children. He examines this using advanced quantitative methods and a variety of data sources, including register data and panel surveys.
Daniël defended his dissertation, titled “From Prosperity to Parenthood: How Employment, Income, and Perceived Economic Uncertainty Influence Family Formation”, in 2023. Before working on his PhD, he completed a research master in Urban and Economic Geography at Utrecht University, where he wrote a master thesis on how the residential environment influences individuals’ voting behavior.
