Dr. J. (Juul) Spaan

PhD Researcher

Juul Spaan works as a post-doctoral researcher at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI). Her current research centers around the retirement decisions of older couples using panel data and advanced quantitative models. She is interested in household decision-making, intergenerational family ties, and the retirement transition.

She obtained a PhD from the University of Groningen in 2025 based on her thesis: “New horizons in later life: Motives, family ties and return of international retirement migrants”. She has an interdisciplinary educational background, with a bachelor degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Amsterdam University College, followed by a Research Master in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

Juul is editor of the NIDI popular science journal Demos, bulletin on population and society, and is part of the organizing committee of the Dutch Demography Day.
