Rafael was born and raised in Colombia. Before arriving at NIDI, he earned a master’s degree in regional and population studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. A Ph.D. student researching how the armed conflict and internal violence affected demographic change in Colombia and attempt to forecast how can the Colombian demographic dynamics behave in a post-conflict scenario. His previous research has dealt with inequality, population and development, and demographic change in Colombia.
He worked for more than 5 years as a teacher for the department of social sciences at Externado University in Colombia, and for two years at the National University of Colombia in the department of sociology.
