Matthijs Kalmijn is theme leader ‘Families and Generations’ at NIDI and full Professor of Sociology at the University of Groningen. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991. His research areas are family sociology, social demography, inequality, and migration/ethnicity. Kalmijn has (co-)coordinated several large-scale social surveys in the Netherlands, including the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS), the Netherlands Longitudinal Lifecourse Study (NELLS), and more recently, the multi-actor survey Parents and Children in the Netherlands (OKiN). Kalmijn was inaugurated to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), to the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW), and to the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe).
