An increasing number of older adults in Europe tends to engage in paid work after retirement. In this project, we study the relationship between working after retirement and older workers’ mental and physical well-being. We conduct two subprojects, each examining one direction of this relationship.
Life courses are changing. Young people are more likely to live longer, experience greater uncertainties within the labour market, and combine work with caretaking responsibilities. Despite this, there is still a lack of knowledge on what these changes mean for young people from different social groups.
Policy makers across Europe give high priority to increasing retirement ages and enhancing the employability of older employees. But are older employees willing to work longer? And are employers willing to allow older employees to work longer?
After migration to the Netherlands, migrants often started a family here. Many children of these migrants, known as the second generation, are now starting to form families themselves. In this project, we examine the demographic behavior of second-generation migrants, paying attention to outcomes such as marriage, childbearing, and divorce.
Do conditions early in life directly or indirectly impact health and well-being later in life? And do government-provided welfare policies influence the effect of early-life disadvantages, complex family structures, and family trends on health and well-being at old age?
It is crucial to have accurate estimates of future life expectancy to inform social security, pension, and insurance schemes, public policies, and healthcare planning. However, estimates of future mortality are often inaccurate because they are based on simple extrapolations of past trends.
It is important to have a holistic measure of ageing. Current measures of ageing, such as the dependency ratio, focus solely on the size of the ageing population compared to the working-age population. These measures ignore that successive generations differ in aspects of human and social capital.
Residential segregation and its effects on social inclusion are a main concern of contemporary urban policy. In this project, we propose an innovative measure of segregation that defines neighborhoods around individuals instead of basing it on administrative borders.
Older workers need to work longer than they once envisioned. In this project, we examine how older workers manage to remain productive in their late careers and how employers support their ageing workforce.
The aim of this project is to link historical population data from population censuses and population registers to digitized Dutch historical cadastral maps for the purpose of demographic analysis at the micro level.
Migration decisions are mainly shaped by local living conditions, both in the country of origin and the country of destination. However, migration scenarios are often based on global or national data. Therefore, we need more knowledge about migration patterns on the regional and local levels.

The aim of the FAMINE project is to analyze the long-term effects on survival and human health of pre-natal under-nutrition. The project uses individual information on 45,000 male subjects born or conceived during various stages of the Dutch Hunger Winter 1944-1945.
There is abundant evidence of a large association between many measures of socio-economic status, including income and education, and a variety of health measures later in life. Understanding the complex relationship between these socio-economic measures and health and mortality is critical for the development of strategies for improving population health – especially in an ageing society.
Family planning is an absolute necessity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It is not only used for population control, but also for the empowerment of women and the containment of sexually transmitted diseases. In this project, we track expenditures on family planning in 69 low- and middle-income countries on an annual basis.
The NKPS is a large scale panel survey that allows the examination of family and kinship ties in the Netherlands. Special features of the NKPS are its multi-actor, multi-method and panel character. Scientific and societal challenges such as population ageing, international migration and changing fertility patterns are important for the development and maintenance of family relationships.
The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) provides scientists and policy-makers with open-access survey and contextual data that makes it possible to compare countries with each other and over time. The GGP covers a wide range of topics that play a role in demographic behavior, with a particular focus on the relationships between generations and genders.
The Comparative Family Policy Database provides contextual information on family cash benefits and maternity and parental leave in developed countries for the period 1960-2010.

Migration has made European societies more ethnically diverse over the last decades. Understanding societal developments among the European population therefore requires better insight into the life courses and family dynamics of migrants. In this project, we study the causes and consequences of life course decisions of migrants and their families.
The welfare state is often assumed to play an important role in migration decisions. To scrutinize this assumption, we study how welfare systems in destination and origin countries shape migration patterns within and towards Europe.
